Garth Vaughan
Garth Vaughan – Author of "the Puck Starts Here"
Born in Windsor,
Nova Scotia in 1928. Garth cartooned for high school and college newspapers and
worked his way through Acadia University and Dalhousie Medical School as a sign
painter. Then, throughout a thirty year career as a general surgeon in his home
town, he also pursued an active career in art as he photographed, drew and painted
the farms, covered bridges, birds and marine scenery near home, as well as at
Nova Scotia’s Fishing Communities, Tancook Island, Ironbound Island, Cape Breton
Island, and Scotland, all of which are dear to him. In his Oil and Watercolor
studios, Garth always has several paintings on the go at the same time, switching
from one medium to another as the subject, day, weather, or mood inspires him.
He has won many local and national awards with his paintings, and is represented
in many private collections. Well known for his community volunteer work, Garth’s
donated paintings have earned thousands of dollars for deserving organizations
and local projects.
As well as his abiding interest in art, Garth has
been fascinated with Ice Hockey since childhood. Following retirement from his
medical and surgical career in 1990, for five years, he researched the origin
of Ice Hockey and then wrote a book, The Puck Starts Here, which chronicles the
origin of the world’s fastest and most exciting game in his home town of Windsor,
Nova Scotia. The book became a ‘national best-seller’ and led to the creation
of a centre dedicated to the origin of Ice Hockey. Popular with visitors from
all over the world, the Windsor Hockey Heritage Centre is now in the process of
being expanded into a world-class museum-sportsplex-hotel complex. As a result
of the appearance of The Puck Starts Here, in 1996, The N.H.L. invited Garth to
write Chapter One of The Official Encyclopedia of The National Hockey League –
Total Hockey. Personalized, autographed copies of The Puck Starts Here are available
on line through vaughanart.com or at
the gallery itself (address available at vaughanart.com).
